Settled In

After months of hounding (pun intended) about adding to my Drifter blog, I decided to flip the "Productivity" switch and jump back in. Call it a bout of New Years Creativity. It's been roughly 2.5 months since the first blog, and time has gone by. I initially wanted to say "time has flown by" or "time sort of dragged its heels," but it didn't. It just passed like normal. However, I can't even imagine how time has gone for Drifter.

Why is your camera upside down?

The above picture is the result of a well-oiled machine. We've developed a sort of "routine."

  • Drifter wakes up approximately 15 minutes before my alarm goes off in the morning. Except on Saturdays, where Drifter wakes up approximately 1 hour before his normal time regardless of how late we go to bed.
  • I crawl to the bathroom to put my contacts in, while he waits at the front door. And at my bathroom door. And at the bedroom door. And on the bed. Somehow he manages to wait very loudly, while singing the song of his people.
  • Drifter and I go for a [small] walk and he does the deeds.
  • I get a shower while he presumes the role of bed-dweller. Somehow, when he's on a bed, his legs grow about 10 inches and he takes up every square inch of the bed.
  • I feed Drifter his breakfast. Drifter eats the Yogurt on top and ignores the rest for more bed-dwelling time.
  • I leave for work while Drifter sits forlorn at the front door, looking like this:

"Please don't leave.

  • I get home from work and he seems to be in the exact same spot, having magically eaten his food (most likely a result of his Stretch ArmStrong abilities).
  • Drifter is pumped.
  • I'm pumped.
  • We go outside, mutually pumped.
  • Deeds are done.
  • We come inside - still moderately pumped.
  • Food time. This time, it's eaten in roughly .75 seconds.
  • Lazy time.  Drifter assumes the lay-on-the-back-with-legs-sprawled-out-pet-my-tummy-I'm-cute position for roughly 4 hours in various places.
  • Bed time.
It's a simple routine, but we like it.

Drifter also got to experience snow for the first time. We were graced with roughly 10 inches of snow the day after Christmas. With Drifter growing up in Florida, he never got to experience bipolar Midwest weather.

I'm cold. But stylish.
In general, I think the snow made him a little bonkers. It was deep enough that he couldn't walk or run like normal, so his first reaction was naturally to run like mad. Maybe if I run fast enough, I'll get away from this cold white stuff and everything will be back to normal! For those that don't know, being dragged in 10 inches of snow at 40 mph by a Greyhound is rather...... fun? Is that the word? No, not quite, I think the word I'm looking for is ZOMGSLOWDOWNAHHHHHTHERESSNOWINMYSHOES. It's in the new Merriam-Webster, right next to Snafu and removing commas at the end of a series.

All in all, Drifter and I are having a good time. There are a lot more things to list, but I want to save the fun for more blogs. Until next time.

Welcome Home

Greetings and Salutations!

After gratuitous amounts of persuasion by Kimberly (Oh So Smilynn), I've decided to jot down some thoughts on my adventures with Drifter. I've blogged several times with... success? No... I'm just going to say my experience with blogging has been a big ellipsis. I usually quit early like a total boss. Well, not usually - I always quit early like a total boss. Such can be said for my Running Blog, which was supposed to hold me accountable for running. I ran for, what, 3 weeks? It was a good blog at least. It had pictures and music and stuff.

Anyways, here's Drifter.

Hello, my name is Drifter.  I am a dog.

Drifter is a 3-year-old Red Fawn Greyhound. In the nine hours that we've been together, I've realized that he's a lazy bum.  In other words - we're going to be best friends. Thus far today, we have walked a couple times, eaten, and been complete bums. At this rate (because 9 hours is a huge sample size), we're going to grow old and fat together.

I've learned a few other things about Drifter thus far:
  • Drifter's racing name was "Just Drifting." I personally prefer Just Drifting over some of the other great names of Greyhound racing: "Thunder Pants," "More Taxes," "Miss Gorgeous" & "Dutch Bahama."
  • Drifter was not a very good racer.
  • Drifter falls asleep listening to classic rock (Aerosmith is particularly lulling)
  • Drifter can nom down food faster than the speed of light.
  • Drifter is mega curious when taken on walks.
  • Drifter does not know that his name is Drifter.
  • Every bed is Drifter's bed.
  • When Drifter is not asleep, you'd best be petting Drifter or he'll nose you to death.
I'm going to try my best and continue blogging about our time together. Hopefully this will improve my writing skills (aka, ween me off of text-lish, broken email fragments & nerd-webforum-speech).

I hope you'll join me in my many adventures with Just Drifting.
